Birding Southwest

Birding Southwest has been rebooted to showcase the regions 17 endemic species, rare specialties and distinct subspecies.

With a wealth of experience gained from all over Australia and its external territories, Louis Masarei has brought those skills home to share the best of his home state.
More from Louis below.

Over the past few years, I've honed my skills as a birding guide across Australia, exploring its diverse landscapes and sharing unforgettable experiences with fellow enthusiasts. The richness and diversity of the birdlife across Australia is truly remarkable. Along the way I've had the privilege of learning from seasoned professionals in the field— Grasswren afficionados, specialists in tropical Australia, and the owners of successful nature-based guiding companies. Their insights and nuances have been invaluable in shaping my skills and approach.

Throughout this journey, one dream persisted—to showcase the beauty of my own backyard, the Southwest of Western Australia, where I fell hopelessly in love with birds and birdwatching. After gathering knowledge and experiences from different regions, I now have the chance to highlight the unique birdlife of Western Australia through my perspective.

So, Birding Southwest was reborn—a revival of a Western Australian bird guiding legacy. Here, I aim to shine a spotlight on our endemic species, rare specialties that thrive uniquely in our region, and the distinct subspecies that captivate birders from across the world. Against the breathtaking backdrops of Southwest Australia, every outing promises an awe-inspiring adventure.

I owe a debt of gratitude to Peter Taylor, whose creation of Birding Southwest and continuous guidance have been instrumental in this endeavor.
