ABOUT LOUIS

Zoologist Louis Masarei

Birding Southwest is run by zoologist and lover of the outdoors, Louis Masarei. Louis has been guiding specialist birding tours across the country since 2020.

As a zoologist Louis specialises in terrestrial vertebrate fauna, with a focus on birdlife. Louis has extensive experience across Australia and has observed over 460 species of birds in Western Australia alone, a testament to his knowledge and field expertise in his home state.

Birding Southwest was handed over to Louis by its originator Peter Taylor in 2023 - a true gentleman of Australian birding.

  • Yes! Louis and the team are very familiar with the rest of Western Australia and beyond! Get in contact if you’d like to arrange a trip anywhere else in WA or Australia including the Pilbara, Kimberley or WA’s many deserts.

  • We absolutely do but our best recommendation is to get in contact with Robyn Pickering at Perth Birds and Bush. We highly recommend her services for the Perth area!

  • We have heaps of resources including our endemic (and near-endemic) bird lists which you can download here. Looking for something else? Just let us know and we’ll do our best to track it down.

  • We run guided bird tours throughout the year with a mix of pre-planned and custom trips. Check our recent offerings out here.

Get in touch to speak with us about creating a tour that suits you!

  • We like to keep our groups fairly small to keep the trip flexible and accommodate everyone’s preferences but get in touch if you have a set number of people you’d like to book for a custom trip.

  • Absolutely! In fact, we encourage you to bring your camera equipment along so you can capture these rare birds on film (or digitally). If you are a photographer and have a specific brief in mind, let us know and we can adjust your itinerary accordingly.

  • A moderate level of fitness is suggested for most tours but get in touch if you have concerns.
